Minentle

One Life Changed - Minentle from South Africa

At just four years old, Minentle  is already demonstrating remarkable resilience in the face of difficult circumstances. Minentle joined the Life Child Preschool family at the beginning of this year. She lives with her young mother, Amahle, in a small three-roomed shack in Philippi, South Africa. Amahle is currently completing Grade 12 while raising her daughter under extremely challenging conditions. The household survives largely on Minentle’s monthly child support grant of R550, and family relationships within the home are often strained. Earlier this year, severe storms and flooding swept through the Western Cape, leaving their shack flooded and further exposing the vulnerability of their living situation.

Despite these hardships, Minentle arrives at preschool each day with a bright smile, ready to learn and engage with those around her. One of the most significant ways Life Child has impacted this family is by providing stability and peace of mind. Before Minentle enrolled at preschool, Amahle faced the impossible choice of either missing school or leaving her young daughter unattended while she attended classes.

Today, Minentle has a safe, nurturing environment where she receives care, education, and nutritious meals each weekday. This allows Amahle to continue pursuing her matric studies, knowing that her daughter is safe and cared for.

Food insecurity remains a daily reality for the family. Amahle shared that there are times when she and Minentle go without food at home, particularly during evenings and weekends. In some instances, she has had to rely on friends for meals. Through Life Child, Minentle receives regular nutritious meals at preschool, while Amahle is able to access meals at school. Following the recent flooding, Life Church also provided the family with food parcels and clothing. These practical acts of support brought relief during a particularly difficult season. Minentle proudly wears the jackets and tracksuits she received and often arrives at school eager to show them to her teachers and friends.

The impact of Life Child extends beyond meeting physical needs. In the classroom, Minentle is thriving. She is a gentle, diligent learner who particularly enjoys threading activities and creating eggshell art. She approaches her work with enthusiasm and concentration and is making excellent developmental progress. Minentle has also emerged as a natural helper and leader among her peers. She takes younger children under her wing, offering assistance and encouragement whenever needed. Whether helping classmates use the hand sanitizer dispenser or reminding others of classroom expectations, she demonstrates kindness, responsibility, and empathy beyond her years. Her teachers regularly observe her caring nature and positive influence within the classroom. Academically, Minentle continues to grow in confidence. She can recognize numbers from 0 to 7, write several of them, and is beginning to write her name and identify letters of the alphabet. These milestones are laying an important foundation for her future learning.

While many challenges remain, Life Child is helping to create opportunities for both Minentle and Amahle. By providing education, nutrition, safety, and emotional support, the programme is enabling Minentle to flourish while allowing her mother to complete her schooling and work toward a brighter future. Together, they are building hope and taking meaningful steps toward breaking the cycle of poverty for the next generation.
