When Esperança arrived at Okalawo Village in Mozambique, she was just eight years old.
Her father had recently passed away, and her mother was pregnant with her youngest sibling. Faced with raising five children alone and without a stable income, life had become increasingly difficult for the family.
At the time, Esperança was too young to fully understand the challenges her mother was carrying. She remembers her mother being deeply saddened by the loss of her husband and the uncertainty that followed.
What she did know was that Okalawo Village became a place of stability, care, and opportunity for her family during a difficult season.
Esperança joined the Life Child project through the local church in Gogone and continued her education while receiving support in health, nutrition, social development, and spiritual growth. She attended Gogone Primary School before progressing to Namuinho Secondary School, where she completed her secondary education.
As she grew older, Esperança became increasingly involved in the life of the church. She participated in cell groups, discipleship programmes, children’s ministry activities, and leadership opportunities that helped shape her character and strengthen her faith.
Even as a teenager, she was encouraging other young people around her. In a community where girls are often expected to leave school early and enter marriage at a young age, Esperança consistently spoke about the importance of education, faith, and pursuing a different future.
Her commitment to learning never wavered.

Today, Esperança is preparing to celebrate her 21st birthday and is in her fourth and final year at Licungo University, where she is studying Social and Political Philosophy.
Alongside her university studies, she continues to serve actively in her community. Esperança supervises a number of children’s cell groups in her area, mentoring the young leaders responsible for those groups and helping guide the spiritual development of younger children. She supports these leaders, encourages them in their faith, and helps ensure that children across the community continue to receive discipleship and encouragement.
The young girl who once sat in a cell group learning about Christ is now helping others grow in their own faith and leadership.
Last year, Esperança also completed a sewing and entrepreneurship course, equipping her with practical skills that will support her future independence and expand the ways she can serve others.
Throughout her journey, she has remained committed to her dream of becoming a teacher – someone who can invest in the next generation both academically and spiritually.
What makes Esperança’s story so meaningful is not only her personal success, but the influence she is now having on others.
The support she received as a child has created a ripple effect that extends far beyond her own life. Today, she is encouraging younger children to stay in school, grow in their faith, develop leadership skills, and believe that their circumstances do not have to determine their future.
As Esperança nears the completion of her university degree, she represents something powerful: not simply a child who received support, but a young leader who is now giving back to her community.
The eight-year-old girl who arrived at Okalawo Village after losing her father is now helping shape the lives of children growing up in the same community.
Her story reminds us that when children are given consistent support, strong role models, access to education, and opportunities to lead, the impact extends far beyond one life.
Today, Esperança is not only pursuing her own future – she is helping guide the next generation as they pursue theirs.
That is the power of one life transformed.
Could you help write another story like Esperança’s?
Esperança’s story began with a child who needed support. Today, she is a university student, a leader in her community, and a mentor to younger children.
There are many more children like Esperança across our projects who are full of potential and simply need someone to believe in them, encourage them, and walk alongside them as they grow.
Through child sponsorship, children receive support in education, health, nutrition, social development, and spiritual growth – giving them the opportunity to build a brighter future for themselves and those around them.
If Esperança’s story has inspired you, we invite you to sponsor a child today and become part of another story of transformation.
Because when one life is changed, the impact can reach far beyond a single child.
